GRANDMA’S CHANYA ROSSS

Goan Chanya Ross or Goan Chana Ross is a dish which my granny used to prepare for me. When I was small I used to eat a lot of vegetarian food. During holidays my granny used to cook it. Chanya Ross was, is, my life which my granny used to cook. It is so yummy and delicious to have it on your tounge almost like Immortal Nectar. I am telling you/suggesting you, to have Goan Chanya Ross at least once in your lifetime. You try it once, I am 100% sure that you will eagerly wait to enjoy it again. If you tell me to eat Chanya Ross whole day I am ever ready.
Chanya ross is a very healthy choice among vegetarian recipes. This is one of the authentic Goan recipe which goes well with breakfast, lunch and dinner, especially with RICE. The authentic Goan vegetarian Chana curry or vatana curry. In goa we name it as Chanya Ross and this is mostly prepared during all the festivals which are celebrated by Hindus and on vegetarian days where no onions, no garlic is allowed. For every holy occasion Chanya Ross has to be there in the menu, without which the menu is incomplete.

Goan Chanya Ross is a vegetarian dish made with “Peas” or “Safed Vatana”. This is very simple and quick to prepare. In the Chanya Ross recipe we add Grated coconut which is not roasted. Roasted coconut is added only to TONAKS. But to ross of this type we Goans don’t roast the grated coconuts. We simply roast the spices grind along with freshly grated coconut and add to the boiled peas. Chanya ross along with coriander, onion and lemon pieces on it, makes it completely different and spicy as Goan people.

As we all know white peas are good source of dietary fiber and it also contains folic acid, iron, copper, protein and vitamins B. they are loaded with antioxidants which are good for overall health. Peas are ideal to promote weight loss. White peas have less amount of carbohydrates in it. It helps to keep food craving and mood swings away. They are good for diabetics also.

When I was small we used to eat Daal and other vegetarian stuff, but not the chanya ross. As we used to prepare it only on special occasions. I was tired of eating Daal and rice, so one day I told my Granny to prepare it just for a change. She was kind enough to cook it as she used to love me more in the family. I was her favorite. My Granny was everything for me. From here onwards in our family we prepare Chanya Ross every Monday. I enjoy it with my family members, sitting together in the dining room.

After Granny, my Mom prepares Chanya Ross for me. My mom serves me Chanya Ross with steamed rice, subzi, and rava fried fritters and I enjoy a traditional Goan meal. You can also serve this Ross with bread and rotis, but I love to have it as a side dish with rice…Umm Yummmmyyy…!!

But no one can match with my Granny’s Chanya Ross…It is so yummy..! You know I still remember its taste. Anyways I will not get a chance to have it again.

“Gradma.!! I am extremely missing your handmade Chanya Ross's taste”.

Love you Grandma……Missing you.!!
